No special tools. Like Mike said, they're heavy and you'll need some help.

Help in terms of extra hands to lift/hold/move the diff and tcase or help in terms of skill/tools/etc.?

I'm guessing they mean extra hands due to the weight.

Yes.. due to the weight.
A floor jack is good to help control the dropping, but both are heavy and it helps to have extra hands to move things around.

Not a bad idea...picking the X back up today...the skids are all off and the driveshaft disconnected...going to have to start gathering the parts...will eventually have a nearly new (to me) drive line...going to have to install a new front diff, transfer case and third member...if I'm going to do this I'm not sticking the 4.6 back in there...going to go to the 4.9s...

If you need a 4.9 front diff I'll have mine out after this weekend.

Now there's some nice timing!

as an additional follow up...anyone know a step by step of a third member removal, swap for a new one and install?

you can get a tranny jack from harbor freight cheap, that will help even if you do have an extra set of hands. That diff is a pain line up.

I'll be in Georgetown, MA this weekend starting Friday until next Tuesday working on the SAS.

Let me know if you want to come down and hang out, help out or whatever and I'll PM you the address.
